The head of the European Commission could not give a timeline for Ukraine’s accession to the EU

EC head von der Leyen did not give an exact date for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. According to her, it is impossible to give an exact date, but “it would be unthinkable” to have the EU in 20-30 years without Ukraine and the Western Balkan bloc as members. This was reported by El Mundo.

It is impossible to imagine the European Union without Ukraine and the Balkan countries within it in 20-30 years, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told El Mundo.

The EC head noted that she could not give an exact date for Ukraine’s accession to the EU when she was asked whether Kiev would be a member of the union in ten years.

“We cannot give an exact date but the European Union would be unthinkable in 20-30 years without Ukraine in it, without the bloc of Western Balkan countries,” von der Leyen said.

She added that Brussels had already taken steps towards Ukraine’s tentative integration into the EU single market in several sectors.

“We are working with them [the Ukrainian government] on reforming their judicial system, on measures against money laundering and corruption, on freedom of information and other issues,” she added.
