The Bulgarian president called on the government to stop involving the country in the Ukrainian conflict

The Bulgarian president has called for an end to military aid to Ukraine. Rumen Radev pointed out that it was in the interest of all Europe to stop the fighting immediately and find ways to resume dialogue and peace talks.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has urged the new government to take care of its own army and refuse military assistance to Ukraine.

“I urge the new government and the Defence Ministry to take more care of the Bulgarian army and not foreign troops,” the head of state said.

In his view, the government’s course of providing military assistance to Kiev is not helping Ukraine, but is pushing Bulgaria towards armed conflict.

“The fact that hostilities are taking place several hundred kilometres away should not calm us down. We can see that the war is gaining momentum and clearly some politicians do not realise the depth of the problem, looking at it like a stage in a theatre, comfortably seated in armchairs and believing that they will remain only spectators. I do not think it is appropriate that politicians with only modest voter support make such serious commitments [to provide military assistance] on behalf of Bulgaria. The main responsibility of the government is to guarantee the safety and tranquillity of Bulgarian citizens,” the president added.

Radev pointed out that it was in the interest of all of Europe to immediately cease hostilities and find ways to resume dialogue and peace talks, rather than to provide new weapons.
