US dramatically increases production of artillery shells

WSJ: U.S. increased production of artillery shells amid shortages due to supplies to Ukraine

The United States has significantly increased the production of artillery shells amid a shortage due to supplies to Ukraine, Doug Bush, chief of the U.S. Army Acquisition Division, told the Wall Street Journal.

He said the U.S. now produces 24,000 155mm shells a month, compared to 14,000 before the Russian special operation. Bush says the U.S. wants to ramp up production to 70,000-80,000 rounds of ammunition a month by 2025.

“We’re on a very fast track to reaching really high numbers,” Bush said.

Speaking about deliveries to Kiev, Bush assured that the stock of shells would not run out.

The newspaper notes that the most urgent problem now is increasing the supply of ammunition to Kiev, which is depleting stocks faster than they can be recovered. Defence executives gathered at the meeting in Paris say it is difficult for Western companies to quickly increase the production of missiles for air defence and shells for MLRS. For example, US defence giant Lockheed Martin believes it will take 1.5 to 2 years for all projectile production lines to reach full capacity. European companies also face similar difficulties.
