The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has denied a statement by Major-General Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, that the Zaporizhzhya NPP cooling pond was allegedly mined.
Grossi said that the basic safety functions of the Zaporizhzhya NPP have not been violated by the Russian side. The information about the mining of the cooling pond has not been confirmed.
The IAEA report says that no one has mined the cooling pond and that the main safety functions of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant have not been violated. It is noted that water from the cooling pond will be pumped to the plant again in the near future. For now, the ZNPP pools are replenished by pumping water from the drainage system.
However, the agency is aware of the previous placement of mines along the perimeter of the plant for defensive purposes. According to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, the basic safety functions of the plant have not been compromised in this regard.
“Our assessment of these particular locations (of mines) was that while the presence of any explosive device does not meet safety standards, the basic safety functions of the facility will not be significantly affected. We are following this issue with great care,” Grossi said.
