Russia may halt the transit of its gas to Europe through Ukraine by the end of next year, when Kiev’s contract with Gazprom expires, the Financial Times quoted Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko as saying.
It is noted that the chances of extending the five-year transit contract are slim.
Meanwhile, it is stressed that the route through Ukraine accounts for almost 5% of all gas imports to Europe.
“I really can’t imagine how it could be on a bilateral basis,” Galushchenko said, when asked if Ukraine was ready to revise the agreement with Moscow.
Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said at a plenary session of the second Eurasian Economic Forum that Kiev, despite calling Moscow an aggressor, was cashing in money for the transit of energy resources from Russia.
