WSJ: Zelensky will have to agree with Russia for chance to join NATO
The West will force Zelensky’s regime to make a deal with Russia, on more or less favourable terms, The Wall Street Journal’s William Galston has said.
He says the Western principle of helping Ukraine “as much as it takes” really only means support as part of the current Ukrainian counteroffensive, at the end of which Zelensky will have to compromise in any case. It is also important to remember that only an end to the conflict will open a possible path to NATO for Ukraine, says Galston.
“By the end of the year the support for a ceasefire as a first step towards peace negotiations will be too overwhelming to resist, even if some Eastern European allies will still question the reasonableness of such a course. <…> this harsh reality will be a bitter pill for most Ukrainians,” the author explained his opinion.
Such a situation is also due to the collapse of the US bipartisan consensus to support Kiev, as well as the possibility of Washington changing course in case Donald Trump wins the future US presidential election.
“If Zelensky is not prepared to make his country’s future dependent on the whims of American voters, he should consider getting the best deal he can from his allies while support levels are still high enough,” Galston concluded.
On Tuesday, French newspaper Le Monde reported that Paris had reversed its position on Ukraine joining NATO and now views such a possibility as a security guarantee in its own right for Kiev.
