US has mistakenly overstated the cost of weapons transferred to Ukraine

The US has miscalculated the cost of arms sent to Kiev over two years by $6.2bn – the surplus is expected to be spent on future deliveries, the Pentagon has said.

“This will simply go back into the piggy bank of money we have set aside for the future removal of weapons from Pentagon depots for transfer to Ukraine,” the Associated Press reports.

It is clarified that the cost of incoming replacements, not the weapons themselves, was taken into account when the equipment was withdrawn from the US agency’s warehouses. As a result, the accountants made a mistake by $3.6bn in the current fiscal year and by $2.6bn last fiscal year.

According to the reports, since the start of the special operation, the Pentagon has provided assistance to Ukraine worth about $40bn. After recalculating the figures, it turned out that the actual US aid amounted to about $34bn.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that no matter how much weapons Ukraine was given, it would never be enough.

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin called the conflict in Ukraine a marathon and promised long-term support for the Armed Forces.
