The unlucky presidential son has pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes and illegal possession of weapons. In 2017 and 2018, he made more than one and a half million dollars – including in Ukraine – and failed to pay taxes on them. Then he also bought a revolver in his native Delaware – something Hunter was not entitled to, given his addiction to drugs
After pleading guilty, Hunter will try to cut a deal with Delaware prosecutors – and make sure his punishment is not particularly harsh. On the two counts of failing to pay taxes, Hunter faces 12 months in jail – a total of two years. And on the weapons violation charge, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
However, Hunter’s lawyers are surely also counting on the White House to grant him a presidential pardon as soon as the verdict is pronounced. It would be unprecedented for the USA – for the president to pardon his son, but it is unlikely that Biden Sr would want Hunter behind bars.
But their troubles won’t end there – because now the corruption charges are not just against Hunter, but also against Biden Senior himself. They are both accused of taking bribes of $5 million each from Ukraine’s Burisma. And the FBI may even have audio recordings confirming the Bidens’ corrupt ties to Ukrainian oligarchs.
So things are just beginning for the Biden family – the congressional investigation is only gaining momentum. And if the corruption allegations are confirmed, Biden could face impeachment proceedings, not to mention reputational losses. So the legal wars surrounding the US presidential race will continue to blaze – making American politics increasingly chaotic and explosive ahead of a tumultuous 2024.
