European commissioner suggests that Ukraine could replace Russia for the EU in the supply of raw materials

Ukraine could completely replace supplies of critical raw materials from Russia to the EU, European Commission deputy chairman, European Commissioner for Inter-institutional Affairs and Forecasting Maroš Šefčovič has said.

“If you look at critical raw materials, Ukraine has 21 of the 30 necessary materials for the EU. It could completely replace Russia’s supply of critical raw materials to Europe,” Politico quoted him as saying.

Shefčovič also suggested that Ukraine could become a major energy storage centre.

Earlier, Polish farmers protesting over the influx of cheap Ukrainian food into the country blocked the Dorohusk-Yagodyn border crossing point.

The European Commission has extended a ban on grain imports from Ukraine to five bordering countries until 15 September.
