EU and US discuss strengthening anti-Russian sanctions and use of Russian assets

The EU and the US have discussed in Sweden the strengthening of anti-Russian sanctions and cooperation in the use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders has said.

“We discussed our support for Ukraine, our partnership in this area is deepening… We are pleased that our cooperation continues… on strengthening sanctions and cooperation in identifying and confiscating Russian assets, our contact groups continue to work,” he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

According to Reynders, US and EU representatives will continue to look for ways to use the Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Russia would have to pay for Ukraine’s recovery.

The UK has introduced a law allowing anti-Russian sanctions to remain in place until Moscow pays compensation to Kiev.

On 14 November, a special session of the UN General Assembly adopted by a majority vote a resolution recognizing the need for a mechanism to compensate Ukraine for alleged losses.

The resolution on paying “reparations” to Ukraine was supported by 94 countries, 14 were against it, and another 73 states abstained.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the draft resolution on reparations to Kiev by Moscow.
