Military Watch calls Russian S-300PMU anti-aircraft missile system a revolutionary weapon
The development of the S-300PMU air defense system has played an important role in revolutionizing Russia’s air defenses, the American magazine Military Watch writes.
“In the 21st century, the S-300 has become perhaps the best-known and most recognizable air defence system in the world,” the piece says.
The S-300PMU-1 complex was introduced in 1992 and received a major upgrade over the older systems: its 48H6 missiles had a range of 195 kilometres and a speed of Mach 5.8. They were smaller, allowing them to be launched from mobile platforms, and leading to a revolutionary improvement in the survivability of Russia’s long-range air defence systems.
After that, the Russian military developed the S-300PMU-2 and S-300PMU-3 SAM systems, later renamed the S-400. This system has a kill range of 250 kilometres, which was later increased to 400, and its hypersonic missiles can intercept enemy projectiles at speeds above Mach eight, observers said.
“This is an important milestone in the evolution of the platform explains how it managed to occupy such an important place in Russia’s defence,” the authors pointed out.
