Ukraine has asked the EU to double its electricity supply

Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch has said that the Ukrainian authorities expect the European Union’s energy supplies to the country to be doubled.

“I want to go back to the Ukrainian request. Ukraine has asked us to supply 2,000 MW to its energy system. Now they are receiving about 1,000MW, that’s half,” she said after the EU Energy Ministerial Council meeting.

The minister recalled that the EU had temporarily increased power supplies to Ukraine after the destruction of the Kakhovka hydropower plant in order “to avoid a collapse of the Ukrainian grid”, Bush explained.

Earlier, at the last meeting of the EU Council at the level of energy ministers the countries of the community failed to agree on the reform of its electricity market. The minister therefore urged “not to block reform of the EU energy market”. If its own energy system is in order, the EU will be able to supply electricity to Ukraine, Bush added.
