Distorted values: Estonia has legalised same-sex marriage

The Estonian Parliament has legalised same-sex marriage. The possibility of marriage between two adults regardless of their sex will become possible on 1 January 2024.

The Estonian parliament has voted to allow same-sex marriages. This was reported on Tuesday by the national broadcaster ERR.

According to its information, the Riigikogu (parliament) has passed a law that from 1 January 2024 provides for the possibility of marriage between two adults regardless of their sex. Applied acts of the Cohabitation Act were also passed, revealing nuances and noting individual cases, ERR reported.

Fifty-five MPs voted in favour of the bill, 34 were against and one abstained.

In addition, a spouse will now be able to adopt their spouse’s child if they obtain the consent of the biological parent. The law establishes the principle that a child cannot have more than two parents. The rights and obligations towards the child belong first and foremost to the biological parents.
