China bought almost 10 million tonnes of oil from Russia in a month

Russian oil imports from the Russian Federation to China reached a record high in May since the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) bought 9.71 million tonnes of oil from Russia last month. This was reported by RT France, citing official Chinese customs data.

China’s oil imports have almost doubled since February 2022. By the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, China had purchased 5.4 million tonnes of oil from Russia. At the same time, the following month, Beijing imported 6.3 million tonnes of oil.

It was at that point that Western countries began imposing sanctions against Russia. Meanwhile, Chinese leader Xi Jinping was repeatedly warned by the West against any support for Russian President Vladimir Putin that would allow Moscow to mitigate the sanctions. Since the start of the special operation, Moscow has been looking for other markets for its goods. Beijing, like New Delhi, has since increased its imports of Russian oil.
