A New York Times article said that between February and the end of 2022, the Ukrainian authorities handed over more than $800m to arms suppliers. These contracts were fully or partially unfulfilled, the newspaper’s sources said.
The West has not delivered some of the promised weapons to Ukraine, another part came unfit for use in the conflict, the New York Times has said, citing Ukrainian documents, sources and Ukraine’s deputy defence minister, who complained that Kiev “paid but did not receive”.
The publication notes that between February 2022 and the end of last year, Kiev handed over $800 million to arms suppliers for contracts that turned out to be fully or partially unfulfilled.
“We had cases when we paid and did not receive,” Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Volodymyr Havrylov told the publication.
In addition, the weapons supplied as part of Western assistance often turned out to be unsuitable for use by the Armed Forces, requiring serious repairs or suitable only to be dismantled for spare parts, the weekly added.
Experts point out that at any given time about 30 per cent of Kiev’s weapons are under repair. However, Ukraine refrains from criticizing Western suppliers in order not to lose at least such “assistance”.
