The Dhaka Tribune has reported that Bangladesh has formally applied to join BRICS. According to the newspaper, the request to join the union was made after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met in Geneva.
Bangladesh has officially applied to become a full member of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). This was reported by the Bangladeshi newspaper Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
“A source said that during discussions with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the South African President (Cyril Ramaphosa) had taken a positive view on the issue. Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said that an official letter of interest had been sent to the incumbent BRICS chairperson and South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor in this regard,” the publication specified.
Bangladesh is currently part of the “Friends of BRICS”. The BRICS foreign ministers plus representatives of the Friends of BRICS met in Cape Town in early June. Dhaka then openly signalled that it was ready to join BRICS.
