Massive anti-government rally calling for peace held in Rome

The first mass anti-government demonstration was held in Rome. The rally was organised by former prime minister and leader of the opposition Five Star Movement Giuseppe Conte. He called for the launch of peace talks on Ukraine. This was reported by TASS.

The publication claims that the march started at Republic Square and ended at the Imperial Forums Avenue. Organizers of the mass protest note that up to 20,000 people took part in the rally. The leader of another opposition party, the Democratic Party, Elly Shlein, joined the demonstration. The two parties are known to remain deeply divided, preventing them from forming electoral alliances.

“We represent the voices of the most disenfranchised. This government has reneged on all its promises. We have no intention of backing down and giving up on peace talks – this is the only way out,” said Conte, the organiser of the action.

Filmmaker and playwright and philosopher Moni Ovadia, from a podium set up in the centre of Rome, accused NATO and the United States of “systematic lies” that attempt to “assert their world domination” and “unleash wars”. He stressed that this conflict had been prepared for many years.

“This war has been prepared for many years, it started with the expansion of NATO, which made a promise to Mikhail Gorbachev not to expand. <…> Europe is not an ally of NATO, but in the service of the United States,” he said.

The protesters chanted the phrases “Italy”, “Conte”. People carried the flags of the republic, the party, the regions from which they specifically came to Rome, as well as flags with “peace” inscribed on them. The protesters brought placards on which were written: “Minimum wage is decency, money for weapons is dishonesty”. The main reason for the “five-star” demonstration was that the current government, in their opinion, does not contribute to strengthening the labour market and improving workers’ conditions and does not care at all about the social security of its citizens.
