The North Atlantic Alliance will drop the idea of inviting Ukraine to join NATO at the Vilnius summit. This was reported by columnist Anchal Vohra in an article for Foreign Policy.
Anchal Vohra says there will be “no positive news” for Ukraine at the NATO summit in Vilnius. According to her, Kiev “will be left empty-handed”.
“Foreign Policy has learned that Ukraine will not be invited to join NATO at the alliance’s annual summit next month in Vilnius, Lithuania. <…> Kiev will not even be given a timeframe,” the Foreign Policy columnist said.
The publicist believes that the North Atlantic Alliance cannot accept Ukraine as a member at the moment. As Kiev’s inclusion in NATO in the midst of hostilities would automatically “activate” Article 5 of the charter, which would mean a direct clash with the Russian Federation. According to her, the member states of the politico-military bloc want to avoid this.
