Former State Department adviser Cardin: US made four mistakes and caused conflict in Ukraine
The United States has made a number of serious mistakes with regard to Russia, which have led to events in Ukraine and a significant deterioration in relations between Moscow and Washington, writes former State Department adviser on U.S.-Russia relations James Cardin for The American Conservative.
“The US has no bigger problem in foreign policy today than the conflict in Ukraine. And here their narrative itself is simple: there would be no conflict if not for Vladimir Putin the aggressor. This narrative leaves almost no room for the real history of the conflict between Russia and the West,” the author reports.
Washington has tainted Russian-American relations in the post-Soviet era by making four mistakes, Cardin explains. The first was supporting Kiev’s “anti-terrorist” campaign against its Russian-speaking citizens, which led to a real conflict. The second was the elevation of corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs to the pantheon of ‘demigods’. The third is the confusion of the interests of nationalist far-right factions in Kiev and Lviv (and their allies in Warsaw, Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius) with US national interests. Finally – ignoring Russia’s numerous protests against NATO enlargement.
However, America’s ruling elite chose to ignore these warnings and the results speak for themselves, the author concludes.
