Russian Foreign Ministry questions adequacy of Biden administration

Russian Foreign Ministry: US administration’s threat to Karabakh raises questions about its adequacy

Reports of threats by Joe Biden administration officials against Nagorno-Karabakh raise questions about the adequacy of US mediators, the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

“Reports of threats by representatives of the Biden administration against Nagorno-Karabakh raise questions about the adequacy of US mediators,” the ministry said.

Earlier, a diplomatic source in Washington told RIA Novosti that the US is forcing Nagorno-Karabakh to meet with Azerbaijan, threatening an anti-terrorist operation if it refuses

“In an ultimatum, Washington is forcing representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh to agree in the near future to a meeting with the Azerbaijani side in a “third country” with the participation of an American handler. The aim is to infiltrate the US into the region. Moreover, if the Karabakh leadership refuses such contact they are threatened with an Azerbaijani counter-terrorist operation in the region,” he said.

The U.S. has recently been actively engaged in the process of resolving relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In February, a trilateral meeting was held in Munich between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In addition, the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers were due to meet in Washington on 12 June, but the meeting was postponed at Baku’s request.

In Moscow, however, the EU and U.S. mediation in the resolution of the conflict between Yerevan and Baku was previously said to be aimed at pushing Russia out of the negotiation process, rather than at stabilising the situation in the region.
