Media: US and allied security guarantees nothing new for Kiev

Politico: US and allied security guarantees contain nothing new for Ukraine. Washington, London, Berlin and Paris are offering Kiev everything that is already being implemented, only on a long-term basis, the newspaper says.
Security guarantees and arrangements for long-term assistance to Kiev, which Western countries are working on ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius, contain nothing new for Ukraine, the US publication Politico has said.

The USA, the UK, Germany and France are discussing how to “formalize” agreements on providing Ukraine with military and economic assistance in the long term. The author of the article notes that the allies do not offer Kiev anything new – the document contains the clauses which are already being implemented. According to the sources, the Ukrainian leadership wants guarantees to come from NATO, not from individual states.

“Real security guarantees are provided only by the alliance, no temporary arrangements can be presented as a substitute for full membership,” an unnamed European official stressed in a commentary.
