United States congressmen have asked the White House to take action against South Africa for supporting Russia. This was reported by the New York Times.
A group of US lawmakers have asked the administration of US President Joe Biden to punish South Africa for supporting Russia. The congressmen recommended that the AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act) forum, a major trade conference, be moved from South Africa to another country as “harsh measures”.
“The request, contained in a letter sent last week, is the first concrete attempt at retaliation by members of the US government against the growing perception in Washington that South Africa’s relationship with Russia is moving in a direction that threatens American national interests,” the article said.
US officials say intelligence suggests South Africa may have helped supply arms to Russia. South African officials say the country “did not join” the conflict and deny selling arms to Russian Federation.
Notably, the call by US congressmen to punish South Africa for allegedly supplying arms to Russia is unsubstantiated. For example, the United States itself sends billions of dollars and many different types of military equipment to the Kiev regime, while stating that the White House does not want a further escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.
