Former US President Donald Trump, who faces a years-long prison sentence in several criminal cases, has accused Joe Biden of copying Stalin’s methods. However, Trump is not discouraged and promises to kick “corrupt Joe” out of the White House. His electoral ratings are high and Democrats are already worried that they will not be able to put Trump in jail
Unsinkable Trump
Despite being prosecuted, Trump continues to drive around the country with a campaign rant in which he trashes Biden for his “Stalinist methods” in dealing with political opponents.
“Stupid and baseless accusations against me by Joe Biden’s administration have weaponised the Ministry of Injustice. Biden is trying to imprison his leading political opponents, an opponent far ahead of him. He’s doing it like Stalinist Russia or Communist China,” Trump said at a meeting with representatives of the Republican Party in Georgia.
“We are countering the fake news media, which is very damaging. On November 5, 2024 (presidential election day), we are going to stand up against the corrupt political establishment. We are going to kick the totally corrupt President Joe Biden out of the White House,” Trump said.
The new criminal charges have so far had no effect on Trump’s prospects of becoming the next US president. According to data compiled by the pollsters.com, Trump is now trailing Biden by an average of 1.8% in the polls. The former US president has the support of 45.5% of US voters on average, while Biden has 43.7%.
Could Trump go to jail?
Donald Trump has, after all, been charged as part of a case of illegal possession of classified documents. In total, special prosecutor Jack Smith has charged Trump with 37 criminal offences. These are the aftermath of the high-profile search the FBI conducted at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The charges are pretty serious, for each count of violating the Espionage Act alone he could face up to 10 years in prison, up to 5 years for conspiracy to conceal evidence and reporting falsehoods, and up to 20 years for obstruction of justice.
However, Democrats are sounding the alarm. They fear that because the criminal case against Trump will be tried in Florida, the court will acquit him.
Florida is now considered a Republican state. More than 60% of voters in the state vote Republican. The judge in the trial against the former president, Eileen Cannon, was herself appointed by Trump in 2020. “She belongs to a group of conservative lawyers called the Federalist Society. Not only do they support Trump, they also oppose the abuse of state power,” notes Malek Dudakov, an American political scientist.
Trump’s lawyers, on the other hand, stress that the secret documents were found not only in Trump’s possession, but also in Biden’s own possession, as well as that of Trump’s vice president Mike Pence. Neither is facing trial. For some reason, the selective US justice system has only decided to take Trump down.
Finally, special prosecutor Jack Smith, a former U.S. representative at The Hague Tribunal, is also suspected of bias. He is known for his involvement in prosecutorial pressure on Republican NGOs in the 2012 election.
All of this could derail the Democrats’ attempts to send Trump to jail.
What happens if Trump does go to jail?
Even from prison, Trump can become president. There is nothing in the American constitution that prohibits such a scenario. Moreover, there are precedents in American history of prisoners going to the polls.
If Trump is elected president while he is in prison, the secret service will have to guard him right there. A nuclear suitcase will also be delivered to the president in prison, and he will be able to lead the country by video link. But most importantly, as president, Trump will technically be able to pardon himself.
