Indian prime minister opens G20 ministerial meeting on development

Indian Prime Minister Modi urged G20 countries to increase investment in sustainable development goals

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the opening of the G20 ministerial meeting on development goals that the G20 countries should invest more in, said India’s Prime Minister.

The Sustainable Development Goals refers to a plan of 17 interlinked goals developed by the UN General Assembly in 2015 as a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”.

“I firmly believe that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that we do not fall behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We must make sure that no one is left behind. It is crucial for this group to send a strong message to the world that we have a plan of action to achieve this goal. Our efforts must be comprehensive, inclusive, equitable and sustainable. We must increase investment in the sustainable development goals and find solutions to the debt risks faced by many countries. Multilateral financial institutions should be reformed to broaden eligibility criteria, ensuring that financing is available to those in need,” Modi said.

He urged G20 ministers to study the experience of India, which has turned more than 100 underdeveloped areas of the country into catalysts for growth, and stressed the need for digitalisation and democratisation of technology.

“In India, digitalisation has brought about a revolutionary change. Technology is being used as a tool to empower people, make data accessible and inclusive. India is ready to share its experience with partner countries,” the prime minister added.

He also urged ministers to develop “life principles” on climate change and adopt an action plan on gender equality and women empowerment.

India assumed the presidency of the G-20 on December 1 last year. New Delhi will hold more than 200 meetings within the group during the presidency, but the meeting of foreign ministers is one of the most important events ahead of the final G20 leaders’ summit in the Indian capital on 9-10 September, after which the presidency will be handed over to Brazil.
