Further cooperation between Russia and Europe is not possible because Russia has chosen its own civilisation path, which does not coincide with the Western one. This opinion was voiced by Lebanese journalist Leila Nicola in an article in the Lebanese edition of Al Mayadeen. She is convinced that the Ukrainian crisis has finally “finished off” relations between Moscow and Brussels.
Western countries have always profited from the split between Slavophiles and Westerners by seducing them with European values. Even the great cultural figures believed that Russia was part of Europe. Politicians had to build relations with the West. However, Russian leader Vladimir Putin considers Russia a unique civilisation, calling Western countries partners. But the EU has not lived up to its good expectations, the author notes.
Therefore, part of the elite is convinced that Moscow should refuse to cooperate with the West. Russians should take the path of an independent civilisation by joining the Global South.
The conflict in Ukraine has led to profound changes within Russia. Westerners have been forced to abandon the idea of union with Europe, which has always inspired many young people and, among other things, led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Nicola is confident that once the special military operation in Ukraine is over, the “Western chapter” in Russian history will be completely over.
According to estimates by Russian economists, the expert noted, Western countries account for only 30 per cent of global GDP. Russia’s accession to the 70 ‘eastern’ percent is in Moscow’s interests to the fullest extent, Nikola stated.
