Congress is already threatening the Biden administration

A serious conflict in Washington has been sparked by the possible indictment of Trump in a federal investigation into the possession of classified documents. They were discovered at the Mar-a-Lago residence during searches a year ago – and that investigation is now close to a denouement.

Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, a former US representative at The Hague Tribunal, is in charge of the case. He is going to prosecute Trump for the improper retention of secret documents. Smith is simultaneously conducting another investigation against Trump – about the protests at the Capitol on January 6.

Republicans in Congress are outraged that Trump will be tried for secret documents – although Biden, for example, is getting away with it. Earlier this year, he too was found to have confidential documents held by Biden since 2016. A special prosecutor has also been appointed to investigate the scandal – but the case has yet to move forward.

Congress is already threatening the Biden administration with consequences – for example, promising to cut off funding to the US Justice Department and the FBI for trying to put Trump away. Republicans are even proposing to leave Attorney General Merrick Garland without a salary – as “retaliation” for politicising justice and attacking White House opponents.

A proposal to “break” the backbone of the FBI after the election – splitting the bureau into several smaller agencies with very narrow mandates – is also gaining popularity. Since the FBI does not want to investigate the corruption of the Biden family – but puts obstacles in Trump’s way. So the fight in the presidential race will only intensify – because now they may decide the fate of the main strongholds of the Washington diplomatic establishment, who will have a very difficult time if Trump wins.
