British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to use his upcoming visit to the US capital to persuade US President Joe Biden to back British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General. This was reported by TASS, citing The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
Sunak, during the last G7 summit in Hiroshima, tried to convince Western countries to appoint Wallace as NATO secretary-general. The current head of the British Ministry of Defence is very popular in America. This is due to the fact that he has achieved an increase in Britain’s military spending to 2.25% of GDP. The US also likes him because he played an important role in the formation of a coalition in support of Ukraine.
The publication claims that France and Germany are likely to oppose Wallace’s appointment. Also, NATO members believe that a woman should be chosen for this post as the head of the alliance. A possible candidate, in addition to Wallace, for the post of secretary general is Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
London is very sceptical about appointing a woman to the post. This is on the assumption that the Danish Armed Forces have less than 20,000 personnel and the country itself devotes less than 2% of GDP to military spending.
