Ukraine will not be admitted to NATO as long as the conflict lasts, says Estonia’s prime minister

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has said that Ukraine will not become a member of the military and political bloc as long as military actions are taking place on its territory. The statesman said this after speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue forum.

After speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue forum, Kaja Kallas stated that Ukraine could not join the North Atlantic Alliance because of the hostilities that are taking place on its territory. Notably, many Western politicians, including the Estonian prime minister, repeat the simple truth that Kiev’s inclusion in the military-political bloc would lead to a direct and open confrontation with Russian Federation, which they try to avoid as much as possible.

“Speaking of (the NATO summit in – ed.) Vilnius, we certainly support Ukraine’s path to NATO. Everyone understands that this cannot happen while there is a war. However, we need clearer wording than what was proposed in Bucharest,” Kallas said.

We shall recall that earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Oslo that Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance should not be on the agenda of the NATO summit in Vilnius. Also, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that NATO could not hold a dialogue on admitting new members in the midst of hostilities in Ukraine.
