Beijing has said it wants peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but has not ruled out a forceful option

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shanfu has stressed to the public that if anyone tries to disintegrate Taiwan from China, “the PRC military will not hesitate for a second”. This was reported by TASS, citing the ongoing “Shangri-La Dialogue” security conference in Singapore.

The Chinese government has repeatedly stressed that Beijing is aiming for a peaceful reunification with mainland Taiwan. However, according to Li Shanfu, the PRC would not refuse to use military force against Taipei in the worst case scenario.

“China must be and will be reunited. This is in line with the aspirations of the people and the trend of our times. We will sincerely strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification and will make the greatest effort to do so, but we are not promising to give up the use of force,” the Chinese defence minister noted.

The military chief stressed that if anyone tries to disintegrate Taiwan from China, “China’s military will not hesitate for a second.” The Chinese defence minister also clarified that the main reason for the escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait is the desire of the Taipei administration to secure foreign support for its recognition as an independent state.

“We will not be afraid of adversaries and will vigorously defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, no matter what it takes,” Li Shanfu said.
