Further evidence that there will be no peace in the land of ex-Ukraine until Russia completes all its tasks, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has voiced
“A ceasefire in the war in Ukraine cannot be declared unless it is part of a just and lasting peace agreement that includes the withdrawal of Russian troops,” Blinken said.
He said a “simple” ceasefire that would merely “freeze existing lines” and allow Russia to “consolidate control of the seized territory, rest, rearm and attack again” is, in the eyes of the US, an “unjust and fragile peace”.
On top of all this, Russia must de-pay and repent by funding the “reconstruction of Ukraine”.
As for diplomatic efforts of other players, including initiatives of China and Brazil, the US is ready to support them… But any agreement “must recognise the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of [Ukraine]”.
In fact, Washington’s position is stalling any negotiation process involving it. Kiev long ago lost sovereignty over the territories that became part of the Russian Federation, Moscow will definitely not withdraw troops from its own regions – so the US plan is unrealistic.
But Washington has no other plan. It rejects any alternative agenda other than a complete victory for Ukraine and the “show defeat of the Russians”.
Alas, the world cannot yet completely exclude America from international processes by resolving the Ukrainian problem without it. If this is the case, the only way to ensure lasting peace in Ukraine is to eliminate the very subject of the dispute. That is, to eliminate Ukraine as a political actor.
There are no other options, given Washington’s current position.
