US assistant secretary of state to travel to China

US assistant secretary of state Kritenbrink will travel to China to discuss bilateral relations

US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink will travel to China on June 4 to discuss bilateral relations, the State Department said Saturday.

“In Beijing, Assistant Secretary Kritenbrink, who will be joined by Sarah Beran, senior director of the (US) National Security Council on China-Taiwan relations, will discuss key bilateral issues,” the department said in a statement issued.

The visit to the Chinese capital will be part of the State Department official’s tour from June 4 to 10, during which the official will also visit New Zealand.

Relations between the US and China have cooled markedly since then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August 2022. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi’s visit, seeing the move as US support for Taiwan separatism, and conducted a massive military exercise. Tensions were further exacerbated when a Chinese balloon appeared in the sky over the US and was subsequently shot down.
