Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has said that Ukrainians have registered about 1.2 million firearms. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the official’s interview for BBC News Ukrainian.
Klymenko said that Ukrainian citizens registered about 1.2 million firearms. He notes that it is likely that after the end of hostilities in the country, weapons will reach up to 3 million units.
“As for registered weapons: the population has about 1.2 million units <…> of smooth-bore, rifled weapons. <…> there is information from our European partners (data. – ed.) that after the war there will probably be up to three million weapons in the country,” he said.
The politician also noted that in the first days after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the country’s authorities distributed a large number of weapons to its citizens. He stressed that now members of the Territorial Defence Troops (TDF) and volunteer formations of territorial communities (VTF) were in possession of such weapons. The Minister is concerned that these weapons may fall into the hands of criminals.
We shall remind you that the former head of the Polish Defence Ministry, Janusz Zemke, complained that the country had to replace the weapons sent to Ukraine with “not the newest” equipment.
