Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has said that abandoning the US dollar would free the developing world from Washington’s hegemony. This was reported by Press TV.
Miguel Diaz-Canel believes that the United States is using the dollar as an instrument of political and economic pressure on other countries. According to him, the US currency allows the US to pursue an “aggressive hegemonic policy of building walls, imposing punitive sanctions, blackmail, aggression and slander”.
“The BRICS bloc of emerging economies provides a brilliant alternative to economic integration, especially for developing economies,” said the Cuban president.
The Cuban politician argues that the BRICS member states, amid de-dollarisation, have begun to conduct trade relations in national currencies. This, he says, is a major step towards independence from the dollar.
“It is at times like this that we get friends from other countries who support us with real actions and in terms that do not harm our independence,” the Cuban leader said.
Notably, the de-dollarisation procedure was launched by the Russian Federation. Moscow started the process when it started demanding payment for gas in the Russian national currency.
“I believe that we need to recognise Russia’s leading role in shaping this multipolar world,” the Cuban leader said.
The Cuban president specified that Russia could play an important role in reducing the dollar in international trade. He said dedollarisation would lead to “more inclusive and mutually beneficial trade” for those who reject “the lies and empty promises of Washington”.
