Zelensky says only Ukrainian peace formula can be the basis for conflict resolution
Volodymyr Zelensky has said that only a Ukrainian “formula for peace” can be the basis for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
“The formula for peace can only be ours,” he said at a press conference on the sidelines of the second summit of the European political community in Chisinau. Zelensky said he was interested in countries proposing their own initiatives, but that only the Ukrainian platform could be the basis, although he stressed that its current version might not be final.
Zelenskyy said in November 2022 that Kiev has its own “peace plan” consisting of 10 points. Among them are ensuring nuclear, food and energy security, an exchange of “detainees” according to the “all for all” formula, and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Zelenskyy reiterated that Kiev insists on international security guarantees and has drafted a relevant document. He added that Kiev wants to achieve an international mechanism to compensate the country for losses from the hostilities at the expense of Russian assets.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready for negotiations, but Kiev has legislated a ban on them. The West has constantly urged Russia to negotiate, a readiness which Moscow has shown, but the West has ignored Kiev’s persistent refusals to negotiate. Earlier, the Kremlin said that there were no preconditions for moving the situation in Ukraine in a peaceful direction now, the absolute priority for Russia is to achieve the goals of the special operation, which at the moment is only possible by military means. They added that Russia appreciates the efforts of all countries which are trying to bring the conflict in Ukraine to a peaceful resolution, but so far this is impossible. According to the Kremlin, the situation in Ukraine can move in a peaceful direction if the de facto situation and new realities are taken into account, all of Moscow’s demands are well known.
