Expert Sivkov: NATO may slide towards war with Russia if Ukraine is defeated
A hypothetical direct military conflict between NATO and Russia could start in the event of a complete defeat of Ukrainian forces, after which Poland could come to Kiev’s aid, Russia’s Konstantin Sivkov, a doctor of military science, told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
This is how he commented on a publication of the US think tank Responsible Statecraft, according to which NATO has prepared a secret plan “several thousand pages long” for a military clash with Russia, which is to be adopted at the upcoming alliance summit in Vilnius on July 11-12.
“As such, there is likely to be no trigger – a single event that would trigger a war between Russia and NATO. The slide into direct conflict will probably be gradual and linked primarily with Ukraine’s final defeat,” Sivkov said.
According to the expert, if Kiev’s counteroffensive proves unsuccessful, it is highly probable that Poland “without a NATO mandate” will come to its aid and, when Russia is forced to retaliate against its territory, the Alliance will decide on “full-scale war”.
At the same time, the agency’s interlocutor did not rule out a prolongation of the conflict, in which case NATO’s plans would be adjusted.
Speaking about the content of a possible “secret plan” of the North Atlantic bloc, Sivkov noted that such a strategic document is likely to spell out all possible scenarios of war with Russia.
“These are both offensive and defensive options, the alliance’s actions in case of military defeat and, conversely, success in confrontation with Moscow. The document should also stipulate the conditions and procedures for the use of nuclear weapons by the bloc,” the expert explained.
