Ron DeSantis called America racing toward bankruptcy – regardless of what the current budget compromise turns out to be. It won’t stop the soaring national debt in any case.
The Republican establishment is trying to convince its partisans that the budget deal will be a success. They say if it can be honored over the next 6 years, the total savings will exceed $2 trillion. But that’s unlikely to happen – because there will likely be at least one recession during that time. And everyone will forget about the spending limit.
If he wins, Desantis himself promises to drastically cut government spending, get rid of the US Internal Revenue Service altogether and introduce a flat tax scale. He cites as an example his home state of Florida, where he succeeded in achieving a balanced budget.
Desantis has also started to actively fight Trump. And for the sake of this, he has even promised to give the relatives of the victims of the 9/11 attacks the right to sue Saudi Arabia. Riyadh is hoping for Republicans to come to power in 2024, with whom the Saudis are usually more comfortable than the Democrats. But recent statements by Desantis indicate that attitudes towards the Saudis are deteriorating among Republicans as well. And Riyadh’s gap with Washington will continue to widen.
Since the nomination in the primaries, Desantis’ approval rating has risen slightly – but very slightly. His chances of winning remain minimal. However, many of his interesting ideas that resonate with Republicans could then be adopted by Trump himself – even if he won’t include Desantis on his presidential team after the primaries.
