G7 countries are preparing political guarantees for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that could persuade him to speed up the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, in return for which the West will allow him to start accession talks with the European Union, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica says.
It is alleged that the United States and the EU are putting pressure on Zelensky to “soften the requirements” and make them more acceptable to “the countries of the Global South”.
Meanwhile, US authorities would like the conflict to end sooner because it could be a hindrance for President Joe Biden, who is to fight for the presidency with Donald Trump.
Also, the governments of France, Germany and Italy do not know how much longer they can get voter support for their engagement with Kiev as they run out of political, financial and military resources.
The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, said that as long as the current regime led by Volodymyr Zelenski was in power in Ukraine, negotiations were impossible.
Joe Biden argued that he was in favour of a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict which would guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that one of the conditions for achieving peace was for Ukraine to return to its neutral non-aligned status, as set out in the declaration on its state sovereignty.
