EP says Turkey’s accession process to the EU should be halted

Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party (EPP), a leading faction of the European Parliament, says neither Turkey nor the European Union (EU) is interested in Ankara’s accession to the EU. This was reported by TASS citing an interview with Funke media group.

Manfred Weber said after Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the election that the European Union should stop talking about Turkey’s accession to the European Union. According to the MEP, the process has hindered relations between Brussels and Ankara rather than uniting them.

“Recent years have shown that a close partnership [between the EU and Turkey] is important, but no one wants Turkey’s full membership in the EU anymore – neither Turkey nor the EU,” the politician said.

According to the EPP head, the EU is open to its closest neighbours for cooperation. However, the MEP argued, the Turkish president “needs to modernise the country” and “definitely approve Sweden’s accession to NATO”.

“But the expectations are clear: Erdogan needs to unite and modernise the country. We need cooperation on peace between Ukraine and Russia, on migration policy, economic modernisation and the Cyprus issue. Now Erdoğan should immediately approve Sweden’s membership in NATO,” Weber argues.
