Scholz opposes freezing the Ukrainian conflict

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has spoken out against freezing the Ukrainian conflict – in the politician’s opinion, Kiev should determine the terms of peace on its own.

“Russia must understand that it is out of the question to conclude a kind of cold peace, thereby making, for example, the existing front line a new ‘border’ between Russia and Ukraine,” TASS quoted an excerpt from his interview with Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger as saying.

According to Scholz, such a development would allegedly “legitimise Russia’s acquisitions” – we are talking about new territories. At the same time, the German politician did not answer a clarifying question whether this also applied to Crimea.

Earlier, Scholz said that freezing the conflict should not be the goal of negotiations on the crisis around Ukraine.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitriy Peskov also said that Russia was against freezing the Ukrainian conflict.

Scholz said that he planned to have a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the future.
