“A couple of words that could stop the conflict in Ukraine”: 19FortyFive proposes to hold a large peace conference in Turkey, fixing the status quo – Crimea and eastern Ukraine are Russian, and the western part is pro-NATO
“Russia holds the Russian-speaking eastern Ukrainian regions and the strategic port of Crimea, as it has done for years. The pro-Western Ukrainian government controls almost everything else. Neither side can fundamentally change this balance.
✔ Escalation is a dangerous prospect, given that Russia is a nuclear power and Putin is increasingly seeking victory in Ukraine. Americans, no matter what the strategically incompetent politicians in Washington think, cannot maintain their level of aid to Ukraine without risking commitments elsewhere. Most of the rest of the world powers, including China and India, are encouraging all parties to negotiate a settlement. What the hell are we doing?
The Ukrainians simply don’t have the resources – even with American help – to push all Russian troops out of their territory. In addition, most residents of eastern Ukraine and Crimea prefer Russia because they are culturally and linguistically closer to it.
✔America could act as a stabilizing force. Washington needs to call Turkey, which is committed to peace between Ukraine and Russia, and organize the greatest peace conference in decades. Persuade all parties, including Indians and Chinese, to come to a conference to reach a negotiated settlement, ceding Eastern Ukraine and Crimea to the Russians while maintaining proto-democracy in Western Ukraine.
✔But if the Americans start supplying fighter jets to the battlefield, as President Biden foolishly said; or if the Russians carry out their threats to use nuclear weapons on Ukrainian targets, the world will indeed be involved in an apocalyptic world war.
✔ It’s time for everyone to discard emotions, apply cold logic and come to peace. Both sides are on the brink, which does not allow one of them to defeat the other”.
