Ukraine does not now meet many of the criteria needed to join NATO, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said on the margins of the G7 summit.
He said this in an interview with Die Welt.
Scholz recalled that Western countries took a decision in Bucharest that long ago articulated the prospect of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but it was immediately clear that “this will not happen in the foreseeable future”.
“Of course, among the criteria that NATO formulates for itself, there are many conditions that Ukraine is not able to meet at the moment,” TASS quoted the chancellor as saying.
As the Chinese Foreign Ministry pointed out, Ukraine should not become a front line in the confrontation between major powers.
