The intention of the West to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia remained unfulfilled. The National Interest magazine notes that similar mistakes have already been made in the past.
Western countries that have declared their intention to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia in Ukraine are unable to formulate a more specific goal, which greatly complicates the situation in the international arena, says Jeffrey Aronson, author of The National Interest magazine.
Prior to this, the United States, which came up with the phrase “strategic defeat” of the Russian Federation, had already made a similar mistake during the presidency of Barack Obama, whose demand “Assad must go” during the Syrian crisis also had no results. The current desire to weaken Russia’s sovereign rights to oppose NATO expansion may also remain unfulfilled.
“It is clear that the Biden administration has not come close to defining a scale for measuring the extent to which the main achievement of the war in Washington’s calculations – that is, the strategic defeat of Russia – has been achieved or can actually be achieved. <…> I confess that I am not a military expert, but the bloody history of Europe suggests that it is dangerous and expensive to bet against the Russian army”, Aronson believes.
