Rheinische Post: not to tease Russia – German and UK defence ministers deny Ukraine fighter jets

During a joint meeting in Berlin, German and British defence ministers said their countries were not ready to supply Ukraine with fighter jets, the Rheinische Post has reported. London will help train and educate soldiers, but fighter jets are not part of the package, the British defence chief stressed. “We do not have a magic solution,” he added. Nor can the Bundeswehr “play an active role” in the issue, his German counterpart stressed.

After the US, Germany and the UK provide the most military support to Ukraine, writes the Rheinische Post. Meanwhile, demands for fighter jets are growing louder in Kiev. But during a joint meeting in Berlin, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his British counterpart Ben Wallace made it clear that they are not ready to take such a step.

They do not want to taunt Russia and exacerbate the situation, the German publication explains. “The UK will not provide combat aircraft to Ukraine,” the guest from London said dryly. His country is creating a “platform” to provide Kiev with long-term support. It’s about training, education, improving defence capabilities. But fighter jets are not part of the package, the British defence chief stressed: “We do not have a magic solution.”

Pistorius is “not a magician’s post in Berlin either”, notes the Rheinische Post. According to him, Germany cannot offer Ukraine aircraft that they do not have or “that do not fit”. He is convinced that the Tornado and Eurofighter fighters are not suitable for defending the country against Russian attacks. The Bundeswehr cannot “play an active role here”. At the same time, the minister stressed that Berlin would continue to provide military support to Ukraine within the framework of existing programmes. We are talking about the supply of ammunition, tanks, air defence systems and assistance in repairing damaged equipment in Poland.
