EU will have to choose between Ukraine and Turkey in expanding the union

The European Union will not be able to accept Ukraine and Turkey as members at the same time because of economic difficulties, Politico reported, citing a senior European official.

The publication specifies that the EU will most likely have to realise that the Western Balkans and Ukraine are the latest expansion.

“I think it is impossible for the EU to accept both Ukraine and Turkey. The market will not bear it,” the senior official said.

It is noted that Brussels’ significant support for Kiev “could force the EU to make it clear that Turkey will never join the union”. For this reason, many in Europe “will breathe a sigh of relief” if Recep Tayyip Erdogan wins the second round of the Turkish presidential election rather than the opposition, which is set on greater integration with the EU, the newspaper concludes.
