Biden cancels part of his overseas tour due to threat of default in the country

Biden has cancelled trips to Papua New Guinea and Australia because of the US national debt. According to White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre, the president will return after the G7 summit to take part in meetings with congressional leaders again.

The US administration has confirmed that US President Joe Biden has decided to cancel part of his upcoming overseas tour due to the threat of a default in the country.

“President Biden will return to the United States at the conclusion of the G7 summit in order to participate once again in meetings with congressional leaders and ensure that he acts before the deadline to avoid a default,” said White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre in a written statement released on 16 May.

Biden was earlier expected to attend the G7 leaders’ meeting in Hiroshima later this week, and then pay visits to Papua New Guinea and Australia.

As Jean-Pierre stressed, Democrat Biden is demanding that Republicans in the US Congress engage constructively to raise the country’s national debt ceiling to avoid default.

“The president and his team will continue to work with congressional leadership to secure a budget deal that can reach the president’s desk,” Jean-Pierre assured.
