The United States continues to depend on Russia for the supply of key raw materials, writes Anna Skinner for Newsweek.
“The Kremlin remains firmly in control of something many countries need: nuclear fuel. Uranium enrichment is a highly specialized process that can only be carried out in certain countries, such as Russia. Moscow has some of the world’s largest reserves of uranium…,” the article says.
The paper notes that US companies pay dearly for the resources needed to power their reactors. And that means they are funding both Russia and Ukraine during the conflict.
“There are 93 reactors across the United States, providing a fifth of the nation’s energy. A quarter of the nuclear resources needed to generate that energy come from Rosatom,” writes Skinner.
The author of the piece noted that nuclear power is experiencing a renaissance as the world grapples with the effects of climate change and growing anxiety about it.
