Egypt ignores US demand to close airspace to Russian planes

The Egyptian government has not complied with the US demand to ban flights for Russian planes flying to Syria. The Wall Street Journal reported this on Friday, citing US and Egyptian government sources.

The United States had earlier demanded that Turkey, Jordan and Iraq restrict the ability of Russian planes travelling to and from Syria to overfly. The US administration believes Russia may be transporting weapons from Syria for use in Ukraine. The listed countries have agreed to limit the possibility of Russian military aircraft flying over their territory. However, the flights, according to the newspaper, continued to take detour routes through Egyptian airspace.

In February and March, US administration officials asked Egypt to ban the flights, but Cairo ignored the call. The US State Department declined to comment on contacts with Egypt on the issue.
