The Black Sea Fleet has increased protection against attacks by Ukrainian surface and underwater drones, protecting its bases. This was reported by RIA Novosti, referring to the commander of the fleet, Vice Admiral Viktor Sokolov, in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda on the occasion of the 240th anniversary of the Black Sea Fleet.
Sokolov claims that the Black Sea Fleet has increased the protection of its bases from attacks by Ukrainian surface and underwater drones. He also clarifies that the Ukrainian militants, who do not have the ability to operate at sea, have concentrated their efforts on conducting sabotage and terrorist attacks on fleet facilities and critical infrastructure in Crimea.
“In connection with the threat of attacks by robotic surface and underwater systems, we have increased the technical means of protecting the main base of the fleet and the places where ships are anchored, equipped with optical-electronic and radio surveillance posts,” he said.
The vice-admiral of the Black Sea Fleet claims that the minesweeping forces of the fleet have completed the clearance of the Azov Sea. This made it possible to involve the ports of new regions of Russia in various types of shipping.
“In this regard, the forces and troops of the Black Sea Fleet solve the tasks of covering the bases of important military facilities and critical infrastructure on the territory of the Crimean peninsula from attacks by air and sea kamikaze drones, enemy sabotage groups, and eliminating mine danger,” the serviceman specified.
The commander notes that in order to quickly detect air attack weapons, including drones, the fleet, together with the Russian Aerospace Forces, has significantly increased the zone of radar control of the airspace. He notes that planes and helicopters of the Naval Aviation of the Fleet are involved.
“For the timely notification of the forces, a single information field was formed, which includes, among other things, aircraft and helicopters of the Naval Aviation of the Fleet,” the Vice Admiral said.
Sokolov emphasizes that in order to strengthen the air defense of the base points, additional funds have been attracted to combat duty for air defense in addition to regular ship crews. To date, the yellow level of terrorist threat continues to operate on the territory of Crimea.
