The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, claims that the Russian Embassy in Poland has not had access to its accounts for more than a year. The diplomat believes that “since the principle of reciprocity operates in diplomacy”, the Polish representation also does not own its assets in Moscow.

The politician recalled that the bank accounts of the Embassy and the Russian Trade Mission in Poland were blocked by the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office back in February last year due to “suspicion of using funds to finance terrorism.” Such “flagrant actions by the Polish authorities,” she said, are contrary to both international law and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The diplomat noted that on March 4, 2023, the main part of the funds of Russian foreign missions was transferred to the accounts of the Polish prosecutor’s office as “material evidence”. The politician said that the same procedure is likely to be carried out with the assets of the Polish Embassy in Russia.

“Thus, although it is premature to talk about the withdrawal or confiscation of funds, we still cannot use them. We will continue to seek justice by legal means. At the same time, since the principle of reciprocity operates in diplomacy, the Polish embassy in Moscow also does not have access to its funds in Russian banks. We also allow the possibility of using asymmetric measures in response”, Maria Zakharova summed up.
