The People’s Republic of China (PRC) responded to the United States that it considered it unlikely that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin would meet with his Chinese counterpart, Li Shangfu, in Singapore in June. This is due to the fact that America’s sanctions against the head of the Chinese Ministry of Defense remain in force. This is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to the Financial Times.
Beijing replied to Washington that the meeting between the heads of defense ministers of China and the United States, most likely, would not take place. This is due to the fact that American sanctions have been imposed on the head of the Chinese Ministry of Defense.
“It will be almost impossible for China to agree to a meeting while the sanctions remain in place,” the newspaper notes.
At the same time, the United States replied that the applied American sanctions did not interfere with Austin’s meeting with Li Shangfu. The publication clarifies that, according to sources, “there is no prospect that the administration of US President Joe Biden will lift the sanctions” imposed against the head of the Chinese Ministry of Defense. Also, the Pentagon complained that they want “open lines of communication” with the head of the Chinese military department, but Beijing “ignores or rejects Washington’s numerous requests for summit meetings.”
